Liverpool in Merseyside, England was founded as a borough in 1207 & granted city status in 1880.

The popularity of The Beatles contributes to Liverpool's status as a tourist destination

Liverpool 's Port has always been busy & a big part of the areas growth - by the early 19th century 40% of the world's trade passed through Liverpool's docks. In 1830 Liverpool & Manchester became the first cities to have an intercity rail link - the Liverpool and Manchester Railway.

From the mid-1970s Liverpool's docks & manufacturing industries went into decline. Containerization meant that the city's docks became largely obsolete.

Tourism has also become a big part in Liverpool's economy from the popularity of 1960s rock groups including The Beatles as well as world-class art galleries, museums & landmarks.
